Ignite and SAP HANA

Atri Sharma
Folks,

I am doing a shootout of Ignite vs SAP HANA for the Ignite blog.

Does anyone have any interesting points to make? Some specific features,
points, case studies?

I am not an expert in HANA, but from my side, I think the following would
be interesting:

- Architectural and Deployment comparison
- Configuration comparison
- Coding examples
- Hardware requirements (Ignite has none)

I think you can write a draft and publish it. We can then provide comments
after reviewing it, and you can update it as you go.

Thanks Dmitriy!

The points are excellent. They also lead me to thinking how ready we are to
compete with HANA for data center readiness and high availability.

Thoughts?

Are you talking about data center dev ops or data replication across
multiple data centers?

Re: Ignite and SAP HANA

Both, actually.

Also, integrating with something like Mesos

Atri,

Ignite provides integration with Yarn and Mesos:
https://ignite.incubator.apache.org/features/deploy.html

As far as the datacenter replication, Ignite does not have it, but GridGain
offers it as an enterprise feature for Ignite deployments.

Re: Ignite and SAP HANA

Atri Sharma
Thanks, must have missed the Mesos link earlier.

Do we plan to integrate the datacenter replication (or atleast a part of
it) in the community version?

I would love to see this as part of Ignite, but it is a very hard feature
to implement. I think it would be fair to mention in your blog that
GridGain provides this feature on top of Ignite, as SAP HANA does not have
an open source edition at all.

Yeah, thats what I wanted to understand if it should be "GridGain provides
this" or "We are working on it" :)

DO NOT write articles that compare Ignite with some commercial tool in
the name of the Apache Ignite project or on any blog that's affiliated
with this project. The ASF is vendor-neutral: this means that we neither
promote nor criticise (nore compare with) commercial products.

FFS, I thought this was clear by now? Maybe I shouldn't have started the
graduation discussion after all. :(

By "Ignite" blog, I meant my personal blog which only reflects my personal
opinion and is not endorsed by ASF or Apache Ignite project in *any* manner.

Re: Ignite and SAP HANA

Atri Sharma
And the reason I sought the community's opinion is because there are people
much more knowledgeable than me on Ignite here and I chose to ask questions
and seek opinions of specific Ignite features (and the discussion actually
turned to a specific feature that Ignite could have).

I am sorry if this caused any confusion. The blog is purely in personal
capacity and IMHO does not affect Ignite's status or graduation maturity.

Don't do it on Ignite blog, first of all.
You can do it on your personal blog as much as you want to, but it should be made clear that views expressed there DO NOT represent the Apache project or community stance.

As Brane said (and been discussed before): the ASF is neutral to the vendors and shouldn't be dragged into holiwars of any kind.

Brane,

This blog is not written in the name of Apache Ignite. This is a personal
blog that Atri is planning to write and he was asking for pointers. Is the
dev list not a proper place for it? If not, then we should move it off the
dev list.

Ah. Sorry; I'm kind of touchy on the subject after that thread on
genera@. Thanks for clarifying.

I am sorry that my wordings were incorrect. As I said upthread, "Ignite
blog" refers to my personal blog.

Apologies for poor choice of words.

Just to clarify for everyone to avoid further confusion, Ignite does not
have an official Apache blog as of yet.

Having said that, I think it would not be a bad idea to set it up. Is this
usually handled by INFRA?

Re: Ignite and SAP HANA

There is an official Apache blog space that already exists:
https://blogs.apache.org/

I think Brane and Cos got concerned that you were going to publish your
blog there, but as of now we have not set up an official Ignite blog at
Apache yet.

Re: Ignite and SAP HANA

Atri Sharma
The only posts I would (or plan to) publish on the Apache blog are
performance metrics and feature designs.

Apologies for confusion again.
