moving off of readme.io forums

Guys,

Unfortunately, I think we have to drop the readme.io user forums in favor
of standard user mailing list.

The main reason is that without email notifications for posted issues and
replies, the forum is impossible to manage. I have been in constant
communication with readme.io folks about this, but unfortunately there has
been no progress done in this regard.

Cos, can you please set up the user mailing list? If possible, can you also
give me the moderator rights to the mailing lists?

Looks like the user list has been fully set and the moderator rights were
given to the people who asked for it.

Now, shall we move the next step and move the user-facing forum off the
readme.io to the Apache list (with archiving on nabble.com as well)?

What's the people sentiment on this?

Here are some pros and cons for both approaches taken from my experience:

readme.io pros:
- easy signup
- nice UI interface

readme,io cons:
- slow response times
- changes and bug fixes take a long time
- not immediately indexed by google

user list pros:
- nice UI with nabble
- ability to communicate via email
- immediately indexed by google

user list cons:
- difficult sign up process (the nabble signup does not work and can create
confusion)
- difficult to reply to questions in nabble (email is definitely the
easiest way)

Would be nice to hear from everyone else as well, should we migrate to the
user list or stay with readme.io?

Maybe stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just do what every other ASF
project does ...

Mailing list for sure. There is a set of questions that do not fit a dev
list that could go onto a user list. Not everyone wants to go to a website
to ask questions, check for replies etc. - to me that's added work that I
will probably not undertake. As a result, people like me may not be
offering their own experiences and answers to questions they could answer.

Can't agree more. It's great that Dmitriy is monitoring the forums and asking
here for replies from the dev community, but it isn't sustainable nor helping
to preserve the knowledge about this project.

I think the hardest part of the migration is to move all the knowledge in
the current forums to the user list. Is there anyone in the community who
is willing to help out on this?

If current forum supports some kind of export functionality I should be able
to craft some scripts to send them into the user@ list (would be a storm of
new emails though....). Another option would be to ask INFRA to help with the
import.

way to import the messages into the mail-archives without actually sending
them. I will open a JIRA later tonight and link it here.
