The export statement in this script should look like
export "$p"
rather than
export $p
or removed altogether

If something with blanks is specified, like
JVM_OPTS=-Xg1 -Xg2
the script reports errors because it splits the line on blanks.  However, the result of the export statement is not used, so the basic AMI works.   But it you are debugging another issue, you get very confused by this.
