{{DataRegionMetricsImpl}} class has a {{metricsEnabled}} flag which toggles some metrics collection. This flag can be changed in runtime (e.g. through JMX), however, when switched off, it simply disables all metrics-related activities in this class, which means that when turned back on, all counters will be stale and all reported statistics will be wrong.
